The Beowulf game was our final project in Interactive Game Design. We had to create a game in Unreal Engine 5 based on the epic poem Beowulf. During this project we were divided into teams ranging in size from 2 to 4. My team consisted of two others and myself. I was tasked with the job of blueprinting, which is essentially scripting but uses UE5’s node system. I learned a lot, and was able to create the game's mechanics using blueprinting as well as other UE5 systems such as AI Behavior Trees.
Beowulf is an old English epic poem that chronicles the journey of the warrior Beowulf. There are multiple heroic feats carried out by Beowulf throughout the story. Fights include the battle with Grendel, Grendel’s mother, and the Dragon. The fight with Grendel was included in our game, in two stages. Our game takes place after the events of the original epic poem. In this timeline, it has been 15 years since the death of Beowulf. Grendel, who was thought to be slain by Beowulf, has somehow returned to Herot, and terrorized its inhabitants.
